As 2024 comes to an end, it’s time to look back at the series that left a lasting impact on me. This isn’t a list of the “best” shows of the year—there’s simply too much content out there for anyone to watch everything—but these are the ones I enjoyed the most. Also, this is not a ranking; each of these shows is special in its own way.

Arcane: Season 2

One of the first series to truly mesmerize me this year was Arcane: Season 2. The animation, storytelling, writing, and music were all top-tier, making it a benchmark for animated series for the next few years. Season 1 was already incredible, and Season 2 pushed the boundaries even further. I have a detailed review of Arcane on my channel, but if you haven’t seen it yet, this is an absolute must-watch.

The Penguin

From the world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, The Penguin stars Colin Farrell in a career-defining role. It’s less of a superhero show and more of a gritty mafia crime drama, with an incredible atmosphere and attention to detail. Farrell and Cristin Milioti’s performances were so strong that they earned Emmy nominations—rightly so!

Fallout

A huge surprise for me! Based on the popular video game (which I haven’t played), Fallout blew me away within the first 10–15 minutes. With dark humor, great performances, and some of the best world-building I’ve seen in a long time, this Amazon Original is a masterclass in storytelling. The 1950s-inspired background score combined with its violent, dystopian setting creates a surreal and unforgettable experience.

X-Men ’97

Nostalgia overload! X-Men ‘97 is a return to form for Marvel, bringing back the essence of the classic animated series while pushing the story forward. And yes, Gambit is a standout—watch it, and you’ll understand why.

Angry Young Men: The Story of Salim-Javed

I don’t usually watch documentaries, but this one was special. Angry Young Men explores the legendary screenwriting duo Salim-Javed, who shaped Indian cinema in a way that may never be replicated. If you love films, this is a must-watch.

Gyarah Gyarah

This was my biggest surprise of the year. I started watching Gyarah Gyarah purely because of Raghav Juyal, but I was completely hooked from the first episode. The writing is razor-sharp, and the series is incredibly binge-worthy. If you haven’t checked it out yet, do yourself a favor and start watching now!

True Detective: Night Country

A decade after the iconic first season of True Detective, Night Country delivered one of the creepiest and most atmospheric mysteries in years. With Jodie Foster and Kali Reis leading the cast, the show blends eerie storytelling with cultural and geopolitical themes. It’s almost as good as Season 1—enough said.

Notable Mentions

These shows didn’t make the main list but are still absolutely worth watching:

Batman: Caped Crusader – Starts slow but becomes fantastic from episode 4 onward. A nostalgic treat for Batman fans.

Shekhar Home – A Sherlock Holmes-inspired mystery set in Kolkata with KK Menon in top form. The writing is fantastic, and the climax is unpredictable.

Terminator Zero – A fresh, anime-style take on the Terminator franchise, unconnected to the old timeline but thrilling nonetheless.

That’s my list of the most enjoyable series of 2024! Let me know in the comments if I missed any must-watch shows and what I should check out next. Wishing you all a Happy New Year—keep watching Filmy Fool, and don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe!
